Stefan Sagmeister
Design Thought LeaderStefan Sagmeister is an award winning graphic designer, typographer, director, teacher, author, mentor and icon. Born in Austria, he now lives and runs his design studio, Sagmeister & Walsh in New York City. Renowned for his album covers for the likes of Lou Reed, The Rolling Stones and David Byrne, Stefan Sagmeister takes on a small number of client projects each year. As a general rule, the studio spends a quarter of its time designing work for social causes, a quarter for self-authored projects, a quarter for corporations and a quarter for cultural institutions.
Solo exhibitions of Sagmeister’s work have been mounted all over the world. He teaches in the graduate department of the School of Visual Arts in New York and has been appointed as the Frank Stanton chair at the Cooper Union School of Art, New York. Stefan is an active public speaker and award judge, and is a member of Ted’s prestigious brand trust. In an effort to make sure his work remains a calling, and does not deteriorate into a job, Stefan takes regular sabbaticals (previously, one full year out of every seven; currently 3 months per year) – time off dedicated to experimentation, reflection, and thinking.
